Looking for a Relationship Coach in New York City?
I recently did a phone interview with Dave Rudbarg of CoachMeDave.com who has a relationship coaching practice. He has a unique way of coaching which gets to the root of the relationship issue. I met Dave about 15 years ago through a transformation program where he was a student and coach.
Dave's business is in New Jersey, but he was raised in Brooklyn. I decided to have him on the interview because many of his clients are within the five (5) boroughs of NYC. 99% of his coaching is conducted over the phone. Occasionally, he'll meet with people in person. He has done a lot of group coaching sessions. He had recently worked in-person with high school staff in Long Island.
When one thinks about working with a relationship coach, one automatically thinks of two people who are involved (i.e.. husband and wife, mom and child, siblings).
Dave looks at RELATIONSHIP COACHING in a different way:
I think when most people hear the phrase ‘relationship coaching’ they assume automatically that it’s romantic or couples, or some sort of thing. It is much broader. My core belief is that all of life is about relationships.
Relationship coaching is much more about just the person and how they see themselves.
The Start Of Dave's Relationship Coaching Practice
Dave started his relationship coaching practice between 2000/2001. He was coaching a program at Landmark Education from a support workshop for volunteer leaders that he had joined and reinvented with incredible results.
It was an amazing experience; unfortunately, the powers that be there having not actually authorized it or designed it said this is not our program. This is yours, you should go do this.
I started to doing it for a long time as a part-time business. And in the last five or six years, I have developed it something of a full-time.
Dave Challenges In The Beginning
The toughest thing Dave went through when opening his relationship coaching practice was having to see himself as a business and as a product.
It's different when you are selling a product, a drink or any physical manifestation of that. When you are the product, that's a bit more of a challenge to separate yourself from what you do.
Advice For New Coaches Starting Out
I would have delved into my specific negative beliefs about money and success much sooner. I think for many years, although I loved coaching, I didn't have very evolved conversations about money and success. On the one hand, I wanted to coach a lot of people, although I really didn't think I would be successful.
Clients Dave Has Helped
This client I know has struggled with work and could not figure out why. One of the things we recognized was that she was looking for acknowledgement from her boss. But, not after she has done substantially amount of quality work. She walked in looking for acknowledgement like all ready and was consistently looking for acknowledgement everywhere. The coaching that I offered her, she resisted, and she actually ended up losing her job.
Another client who I have coached over the last year has had a very rough year on many levels. There were several traumatic events for this man. One of the things we looked at was what integrity was and what we came to, was not only honoring your word, but, more importantly being the kind of person who walks the walk and talks the talk and who doesn't look for other people to give agreement.
It's been difficult for me over the years. I had related to gossip as an opportunity to get closer and it's not. So for him, he has had a year where he has not only bounced back from some very difficult situations but he is now grounded, peaceful and loves himself in a way he has never experienced before.
I hope the above two scenarios has communicated the kind of work I do.
Why Choose Dave As Your Relationship Coach?
One of my former clients and dear friend Rha Goddess from MovetheCrowd.com has referred to me as an anointed coach. She said, "I call you that because you pick up things below the radar." And that's really the truth. There is just something about the way I listen. I not only listen to what has been said and but also listen for what is not being said.’ I am always learning and always training. I have a coach, I read a great deal. I recently took a human development course I hadn't done before. I am a work in progress too.
The number 1 way you bring in new customers
I say word of mouth. I have begun to do a fair amount of Facebook Live broadcasts where I'll speak on a topic for 5 or 10 minutes. Just kind of give some thoughts and insights. I talk a little about my own experiences. I did one recently about expectations.
I am on social media. I also will have a book coming out this year of some of my writings. Doing this interview with you is certainly part of the process as well.
Has the Internet played a big role in your business as it has become more prevalent?
Sure, without question. Almost all communication I put out is somehow captured somewhere online either on Facebook, my website, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Tumblr.
Six months to a year into the future for his practice
My book will be out, and it will be doing well. The plan is to have it as an eBook initially, then to have hard copies.
I'm beginning to book speaking engagements. love to speak to groups of people. I like to put out the message to larger groups of people.
And the message is-
We are not alone - meaning each of us at our lowest point feels alone and unknown and low. I'd like to have the message that we are not alone. There are others who feel the same.
How Long Does A Client Work With You?
There are some clients who worked with me for a number of years. There are others who came into deal with one specific thing and we worked together for six months. Once the issue is addressed, they were good to go.
What do you love most about your business?
Having the experience of connecting. Having the experience that out of the conversations that I have with my clients, something profound alters in their lives. They begin to see themselves and their loved ones and the people around them differently ? with love as opposed with judgement. That's what I love most about my business.
More About Dave
In addition to being a relationship coach, I am also a singer. I put out my first album six to seven years ago called "Living In the Land of Yes." It's on every possible outlet including Amazon, iTunes, Spotify. It's gotten extraordinary reviews over the years.
In the next three or four weeks, I have some new music coming out which will be digital download only from a website called BandCamp.com. it'll be four original songs and it'll be unplugged, bit softer than my usual way of singing. The feedback that I have gotten has been very positive.
My earlier career for many years was in retail when that existed. Back in the days when people used to buy cassettes and CD's and shop as opposed to pushing a button online.
Music is still a huge passion of mine. Massive, massive passion.
Dave final thoughts about who he is -
I am a King surrounded by Kings and Queens.
